  • Description

Argentina and the Central American countries believe the world's economic imbalance could be solved with the introduction of a programme on integrated basic products.

Their suggestion was made during Tuesday's (18 May) session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNICTAD) which is currently being held in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Much of the business at the conference is aimed at implementing international action to free developing countries from poverty and despair.

Nicaragua's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Alejandro Montiel Arguello, presented the views of the Central American countries to the conference. He said that if the programme suggested by his group could be implemented it would need to be accompanied by a guarantee to producing countries, so as not to cause further imbalance on international markets in basic products.

To bring all countries into line with each other economically, a greater and more efficient co-operative had to be formed, he said. He also said that his group expected to announce soon that they would set up a General American Social and Economic Community, similar to the European Economic Community.

Argentina was represented by its ambassador to Kenya, Senor Guillermo Arnaud. He said that there were many fields where it was important to develop bi-lateral and multi-lateral action to defend common interest in some countries. He said this was particularly important when countries were faced with delays caused by internal problems.

He said Argentina also believed commercial, economic and technical co-operation between countries with different social and economic structures could be achieved without interference into the politics or internal affairs of any sovereign state.
