SYNOPSIS: Jet aircraft from NATO's Southern Europe air Force on Saturday made repeated attacks on a group of targets set up near the town of Eskisehir in western Turkey.

The aircraft--from Italy, Greece, Turkey and the United States--were taking part in a shooting and bombing competition. Hosted by the Turkish Air Force, the competition was code-named Besthit-71.

One of the front-line aircraft of the United States Air Force--a Phantom fighter-bomber.

The competing aircraft went through their paces with a variety of missiles--machine guns, bombs and rockets. An extremely high degree of skill was needed to record a hit in the target area.

The entire competition was held under the watchful eye of an independent umpire from the United Kingdom.

After the final runs were completed, the targets were dismantled and the number of hits totalled up.

By the end of the day the scoreboard was showing a commanding lead for the F-100 aircraft of the Turkish Air Force over the superior Phantoms of the United States Air Force. The Turkish team, led by Captain Adar, scored a total of 596 points--56 points ahead of the Americans.
