    MANY PEOPLE WERE REPORTED HURT AFTER POLICE MADE REPEATED CHARGES ON THE DEMONSTRATORS.

    THE BATTLE SCENE WAS LITTERED WITH SMASHED AND BURNING CARS, STONES AND THE REMAINS OF CHAIRS AND TABLES TAKEN FROM A RESTAURANT TO MAKE BARRICADES.

    POLICE SIRENS WAILED AND THE HORNS OF PRIVATE CARS RUSHING THE INJURED TO HOSPITAL BLARED OUT ABOVE THE DIN OF THE FIGHTING.

    THE FIRST CLASHES OCCURRED AFTER 5,000 DEMONSTRATORS, INCLUDING STUDENTS, REACHED THE PIAZZA WHERE THE EMBASSY IS SITUATED AND PROMPTLY BURNED THE EFFIGY OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE.

    POLICE LATER SAID THAT ABOUT 50 DEMONSTRATORS HAD BEEN DETAINED. THEY MARCHED ON THE EMBASSY FROM A POST-ELECTION RALLY BY THE EXTREME LEFTWING PROLETARIAN SOCIALIST PARTY.

    TODAY (SATURDAY) STUDENTS FOUGHT STONE-THROWING DUELS AT THE OCCUPIED ROME UNIVERSITY.
