  • Description

ABINGDON, VA., MAY 11 (UPI)--MRS. LYNDON B. JOHNSON SET OUT TODAY ON A LEISURELY TWO-DAY TOUR OF HISTORIC POINTS IN VIRGINIA TO PROMOTE HER AMERICA BEAUTIFUL CAMPAIGN AND PERSUADE U.S. TOURISTS TO SEE THEIR OWN LAND FIRST.

THE FIRST LADY, RELAXED ENOUGH TO KICK OFF HER SHOES ON THE BUS BETWEEN STOPS, STARTED BY DEDICATING A WAYSIDE SHELTER NEAR THE LITTLE SCOTTISH TOWN OF DUMFRIES, VA., ON INTERSTATE ROUTE 95.

SHE AND HER PARTY OF CABINET WIVES THEN TOURED MONTICELLO, THE GADGET-FILLED MANSION NEAR CHARLOTTESVILLE BUILT BY THOMAS JEFFERSON, THIRD PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES.

THE DAY ENDED IN THE SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA MOUNTAINS 400 MILES FROM WASHINGTON WITH A PERFORMANCE OF "JULIUS CAESAR" AT THE STATE-SUPPORTED BARTER THEATER OF ABINGDON.

BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE, MRS. JOHNSON WAS TO PRESENT THE ANNUAL BARTER THEATER AWARD TO PRODUCER ROGER STEVENS, SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE PRESIDENT FOR CULTURAL AFFAIRS.

WITH THE PRIZE WENT A VIRGINIA HAM, A PLATTER TO EAT IT ON, JOBS IN THE THEATER FOR TWO ACTORS OF STEVENS' CHOICE, AND AN ACRE OF LAND NEAR ABINGDON -- A TOWN INCORPORATED AT THE START OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION AND ONCE A FAVORITE HUNTING AREA OF DANIEL BOONE.

THE JOHNSON PARTY, ACCOMPANIED BY INTERIOR SECRETARY STEWART L. UDALL, HAD LUNCH AT MONTICELLO WHERE MRS. JOHNSON PRESENTED TO THE THOMAS JEFFERSON MEMORIAL FOUNDATION A SEEDLING FROM A CHESTNUT TREE ON THE SOUTH LAWN OF THE WHITE HOUSE.

ALONG THE WAY SHE HAD HELPED PLANT PETUNIAS, CANDY TUFT, SPIREA, LILACS AND AZALEAS CONTRIBUTED BY THE STATE OF VIRGINIA AND THE ASSOCIATED CLUBS OF VIRGINIA FOR ROADSIDE DEVELOPMENT.

MRS. JOHNSON TOOK A PLANE FROM CHARLOTTESVILLE TO TRI-CITIES AIRPORT IN NORTHEASTERN TENNESSEE AND THEN DROVE BACK TO ABINGDON. HER HEADQUARTERS WAS ABINGDON'S MARTHA WASHINGTON INN, AN ANTIQUE-CRAMMED HOTEL WHICH DATES FROM THE EARLY YEARS OF U.S. INDEPENDENCE.

TOMORROW, THE FIRST LADY'S GROUP WILL RETURN TO WASHINGTON BY WAY OF THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY, A SCENIC HIGHWAY BUILT ALONG THE PEAKS AND RIDGES OF THE BLUE RIDGE MOUNTAINS.

THE RETURN TRIP WILL INCLUDE A MOUNTAIN-CLIMBING EXPEDITION LED BY UDALL. BUT MRS. JOHNSON ELECTED TO SKIP THAT.
