European Economic Community (EEC) Commissioner Sir Christopher Soames met on Tuesday (18 September 1973) in Tokyo with Japan's Prime Minister, Mr. Kakuei Tanaka. The meeting took place at the Premier's official residence.
Japanese Government sources said later that the two leaders discussed the "Charter of Atlantic Principles", proposed by United States Secretary-of-State designate, Dr. Henry Kissinger. Mr. Tanaka expressed deep interest in trilateral relations between Japan, the United States and the EEC. He said co-operation between the EEC and Japan would help achieve world peace and expand the economy. The sources added that Mr. Tanaka had voiced the hope that more European exporters would come to Japan to explore the market and develop trade.
Sir Christopher arrived in Japan shortly before the opening of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) ministerial conference (on 12 September), at which he led the EEC delegation. Mr. Tanaka will visit France, West Germany and the United Kingdom next week.
