  • Description

IN THE NEW DELHI STATE FLOODS, THE SWOLLEN JUMUNA RIVER REACHED A NEW HIGH MARK OF 677 FEET (206 METRES) YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) -- 4???? FEET (NEARLY 2 METRES) ABOVE THE LEVEL CONSIDERED DANGEROUS. THE SWIRLING WATERS OF THE JUMUNA HAVE INUNDATED NEARLY 130 VILLAGERS, CAUSED THE DEATH OF AT LEAST 24 PEOPLE, AND LEFT SOME 20,000 PEOPLE DESTITUTE.

ALL TRAFFIC ON THE NEW DELHI STATE'S MAIN ROAD WAS SUSPENDED YESTERDAY. THE ROAD IS CONSIDERED THE NATIONAL LIFELINE OF INDIA. THE FLOODS HAVE ALSO ENTERED THE CAPITAL ITSELF, WHERE ON MONDAY A GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN SAID DAMAGE TO CROPS ALONE WAS ESTIMATED AT 10,000,000 RUPEES (ABOUT GBP500,000).

MANY VILLAGERS REMAIN MAROONED IN THE FLOODWATERS, ALTHOUGH SOME 4,000 HAVE BEEN EVACUATED TO 10 RELIEF CAMPS. BUT IN SOME LOW-LYING VILLAGES AROUND NEW DELHI, WHERE THE INHABITANTS ARE USED TO FLOODS, MANY FARMS ARE GOING ABOUT LIFE AS BEFORE.
