  • Description

Several thousand Right-wing extremists gathered in Madrid on Sunday (2 April) to celebrate the 39th anniversary of the late General Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War.

SYNOPSIS: The rally commemorated the Nationalist forces' victory in the Spanish Civil War in 1939, and lamented the death of their leader General Francisco Franco, more than two years ago. Those who gathered outside a city cinemas to hear an address from Right-wing leaders included Civil War veterans and young members of the extreme Right-Wing Fuerza Nueva (New Force) party.

Senor Blas Pinar, the leader of the Fuerza Nueva party, was one of the speakers, and he launched an attack on the policies of the present Centrist government of ??? Adolfo Suarez. He told the crowd that Spain was being ruined by what he called non-government, and personally criticised Prime Minister Suarez for failing to curb increasing social and political violence.

Senor Pinar's speech was wildly greeted by the crowd, who sang Fascist hymns and chanted "Franco, Franco, Franco" in response.

Riot police were on hand to deal with possible clashes between Fuerza Nuevo and Left-wing opponents but there were no incidents. In a bid to check violence, the government has set up a special anti-terrorist police unit, based on similar units already operating in France.
