  • Description

Several hundred women and children paraded through the streets of Nicosia on Saturday (29 March) to call for the speedy release of missing Greek-Cypriots and their return home.

The women first gathered outside the Presidential Office, where President Makarios appeared and talked with them. Earlier in the week he told a conference of refugee women that Cyprus had the support of many countries in its efforts to implement November's United Nations' resolution calling for foreign troops to withdraw and the return of all refugees to their homes.

The demonstrators then gathered in Metaxas Square and continued the march to the Houses of Parliament where the Speaker ??? the House, Glafkos Clerides, assured the women that his first task at next weak's bilateral talks will be to raise the question of missing refugees.

Earlier in the week President Makarios announced that talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriot representatives will resume next Wednesday (2 April) and a United Nations' spokesman later said they would be delayed for another two days to allow participants time to assemble.

The talks have been suspended for more than six weeks following the Turkish-Cypriot decision to declare an autonomous state in the north of the island.
