  • Description

President Sangoule Lamizana of Upper Volta played host in Ouagadougou last week to Presidents Diore Hamani of Niger and Moussa Traore of Mali for talks about joint development of the Lyptako Sourma region lying between their three states.

This follows the signing last year of a tripartite protocol on the future of the area by the three presidents. On his arrival for the conference, President Hamani said that the aim of their session should be to arrive at plans for the territory that were seriously beneficial to their populations.

President Lamizana held a welcoming banquet for his two guests at his palace at the end of the first day of talks. By the end of the second day the conference was complete, and the thee leaders had decided upon a wide range of joint projects for the Lyptako Sourma territory.

These plans include the construction of new road and rail networks, hydro-electric dams, exploitation of tin, phosphate and other materials... plus a public health programme and an education scheme. The three Presidents also agreed upon setting up a Liptako Sourma development fund to meet the cost of their schemes.

On returning to their respective countries on Saturday (12 Aug), President Hamani and Traore said they were most satisfied with the results of their Ouagadougou conference.
