  • Description

TENSION IS STILL NEAR FLASH-POINT IN TROUBLED CYPRUS WHERE CLASHES BETWEEN THE GREEK AND TURKISH COMMUNITIES CLAIMED UP TO 300 LIVES EARLIER THIS WEEK.PRESIDENT MAKARIOS CONFERRED ON THE CRISIS TODAY (SATURDAY) WITH BRITAIN'S COMMONWEALTH SECRETARY, MR DUNCAN SANDYS, WHO'S IN NICOSIA FOR AN ON-THE-SPOT APPRAISAL.

AFTER THE TALKS, THE CYPRIOT LEADER SAID HE THOUGHT IT BETTER IF CYPRUS ACCEPTED HELP ONLY FROM BRITAIN TO SETTLE THE DISPUTE BECAUSE GREECE AND TURKEY'S INTERESTS ON THE ISLAND WERE TOO DIRECT.

PRESIDENT MAKARIOS ADDED HE WAS OPTIMISTIC ABOUT THE RESTORATION OF PEACE.BUT THE TURKISH CYPRIOT LEADER, DR KUTCHUK, WHO ALSO SAW MR SANDYS, SAID HE THOUGHT THE SITUATION STILL "VERY GRAVE".

AT THE TRUCE HEADQUARTERS IN NICOSIA, LEADERS OF BRITISH, TURKISH AND GREEK UNITS HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING HOW BEST TO SUPERVISE THE CEASE-FIRE ARRANGED A FEW DAYS AGO.ATTENDING THE TALKS HAS BEEN MAJOR-GENERAL P.G.YOUNG, BRITISH COMMANDER OF THE JOINT TRUCE FORCE, FILMED HERE.
