INTRODUCTION: The 81st annual invitation marathon race in Boston, Massachusetts, was run on Monday (18 April) in brilliant sunshine and before record crowds.

SYNOPSIS: It looked like the mass evacuation of Boston -- but in fact it was the start of the marathon race which attracted exactly 2,933 competitors. Ahead of them lay 26 miles 385 yards in the hot sunshine.

Competitors came mainly from the United States and Canada, but there were some from Europe and Japan. Among them, too, were no fewer than 126 women.

A Japanese competitor was among the early leaders as the race passed through the suburbs of Boston, but when they got to the first refreshment point, every one of the runners was glad to take a drink or a quick shower to cool down.

Nearing the halfway stage, Canadian Jerome Drayton surges to the front, passing American Bill Rodgers, who won in 1975 and set up the existing record time for the race -- two hours, nine minutes and 55 seconds.

In 1975 Drayton dropped out of the race two miles from home, but this year, he strode ahead to a clear lead....well ahead of the field.

And Drayton strode home to win the Boston marathon in a time of two hours 14 minutes 46 seconds.

Second was Veli Bally of Turkey...58 seconds behind. But the victory was Drayton's in a Boston marathon that was bigger and noisier than ever before.
