    PRESIDENT JOMO KENYATTA OF KENYA, ON THE LAST DAY OF HIS EIGHT-DAY STATE VISIT TO ETHIOPIA, ON MONDAY (6 NOV) ATTENDED THE OPENING OF THE SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON GLOBAL IMPACTS OF APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY.

    THE CONFERENCE, WHICH WAS BEING HELD IN AFRICA HALL, WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED BY EMPEROR HAILE SELASSIE.

    THE ETHIOPIAN MINISTER OF EDUCATION, MR. ATO AKALE-WORK WOLD, WHO IS PRESIDING OVER THE CONFERENCE, SAID IN AN INTRODUCTORY SPEECH THAT THE PRESENCE OF THE EMPEROR AND PRESIDENT KENYATTA GAVE THE OPENING OF THE CONFERENCE ADDED MORAL SUPPORT.

    THE ETHIOPIAN CROWN PRINCE, LEUL MERID AZMATCH ASEAWOSSEN, AND OTHER MEMBERS OF THE ROYAL FAMILY ALSO ATTENDED THE OPENING SESSION.

    THE CONFERENCE IS BEING HELD UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE UNITED NATIONS EDUCATIONAL SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ORGANISATION (UNESCO), THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURAL ORGANISATION (FAO), THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MICROBIOLOGICAL SOCIETIES AND THE HAILE SELASSIE UNIVERSITY.

    IN HIS SPEECH THE EMPEROR SAID THAT MAN HAD NOW PASSED THE STAGE WHEN HE WAS THE VICTIM OF HIS ENVIRONMENT . HE CALLED ON THE SCIENTISTS TO STUDY MEANS OF CONTROLLING THE USE OF MICROBIOLOGICAL ORGANISMS FOR WEAPONS OF WAR AND DESTRUCTION.

    THE CHAIRMAN OF THE INTERNATIONAL ORGANISING COMMITTEE OF THE CONFERENCE, PROFESSOR HEDEN, AND THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE CONFERENCE, DR. AKLILU LEMMA ALSO SPOKE AT THE OPENING SESSION ATTENDED BY SOME 200 SCIENTISTS.
