  • Description

After two weeks of heavy fighting, Highway 30, which links Phnom Penh with Sbou (Khmer Republic) was reopened on Saturday (25 August).

The vital road was cut about 12 miles (19 KM) south west of Phnom Penh by Communist-led insurgents on August 14. On Saturday, refugees who were driven away from their houses began returning. Some of them faced the job of rebuilding their houses...many had an enormous repair job.

Several hundred refugees are still housed in an old Pagoda about 14 miles (22 KM) from Phnom Penh. They have been told to stay together until the area where they live, further south along the reopened highway is declared safe. On Sunday (26 August), there was still sporadic fighting reported from four sections of the road link.
