  • Description

AMBASSADORS FROM BRITAIN, THE UNITED STATES, FRANCE AND THE SOVIET UNION TODAY (THURSDAY MARCH 26) BEGAN THE FIRST FOUR-POWER TALKS ON BERLIN IN 11 YEARS.

THEY MET IN THE ALLIED CONTROL COUNCIL BUILDING IN THE AMERICAN SECTOR OF BERLIN FOR THREE HOURS AND WILL NEXT MEET ON APRIL THE 28TH.

THE MAJOR WESTERN AIMS AT THE TALKS ARE TO EASE THE MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE AND GOODS BETWEEN BERLIN AND THE WEST, AND FREEDOM FOR WEST BERLINERS TO CROSS THE WALL TO VISIT RELATIVES IN THE EASTERN SECTOR.

THE FOUR AMBASSADORS ARE THE SUCCESSORS OF THE FORMER ALLIED HIGH COMMISSIONERS WHO RAN OCCUPIED GERMANY AFTER WORLD WAR TWO.

THE CHAIRMAN OF THE MEETING WAS MR. KENNETH RUSH, THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR TO WEST GERMANY. THE OTHERS WERE SIR ROGER JACKLING, AND M. FRANCOIS SEYDOUX DE CLAUSONNE, THE BRITISH AND FRENCH AMBASSADORS TO BONN, AND MR. PYOTR ABRASSIMOV, THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR TO EAST GERMANY.

SOME SCOPE OF DEMONSTRATORS WAVED PLACARDS STATING 'GET RID OF THE WALL', AND 'THE ALLIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR 'THE WHOLE OF BERLIN', AS THE AMBASSADORS ARRIVED FOR THE MEETING.

AN OFFICIAL STATEMENT ISSUED AFTER THE MEETING SAID IT HAD BEEN AGREED THAT THE SESSIONS WOULD BE CONFIDENTIAL.
