  • Description

IN MANY COUNTRIES TRADITIONS AND CRAFTS ARE BEING SACRIFICED TO MORE AUTOMATED MEANS OF PRODUCTION. BUT IN SENEGAL THE GOVERNMENT HAS COMMITTED ITSELF TO PRESERVING AND PROTECTING CRAFTSMEN WHOSE SKILLS HAVE REMAINED INTACT IN FAMILIES FOR MANY GENERATIONS. AND, BY PRESERVING THESE SKILLS SENEGAL IS EARNING VALUABLE FOREIGN EXCHANGE FROM TOURISTS, ANXIOUS TO BUY GENUINELY HANDMADE SOUVENIRS.

IN 1961 A SPECIAL VILLAGE WAS OPENED IN SOUMBEDIOUNE, A TOWN OF A COAST, TO ACCOMMODATE PEOPLE OF VARIOUS SKILLED TRADES. THEY INCLUDE POTTERS, SCULPTORS, JEWELLERS, BLACKSMITHS, SHOEMAKERS AND BOAT BUILDERS.

THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS VISIT THE VILLAGE EACH YEAR IN SEARCH OF THE UNIQUE AND WELL-MADE SOUVENIRS.

MANY OF THE WARES OF THE TRADESMEN ARE ALSO SOLD WITHIN SOUMBEDIOUNE AND THE REST OF SENEGAL, BOOSTING LOCAL TRADE.
