  • Description

ABOUT THREE HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS STAGED AN ANTI-NATO MARCH THROUGH CENTRAL BRUSSELS TONIGHT (SUNDAY).

THE DEMONSTRATION CAME AS A RESULT OF THE DECISION TO RESITE THE NATO HEADQUARTERS IN BELGIUM FOLLOWING FRANCE'S DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE ORGANISATION'S INTEGRATED MILITARY STRUCTURE.

THE DEMONSTRATORS PARADED THROUGH THE CENTRE OF BRUSSELS SHOUTING "DOWN WITH NATO", "DOWN WITH THE UNITED STATES", "JOHNSON ASSASSIN" AND "LETS QUIT NATO". MANY OF THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE ACCOMPANIED BY CHILDREN. THE DEMONSTRATION WAS QUIET AND ORDERLY AND THE POLICE DID NOT INTERVENE.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS ORGANISED BY A MOVEMENT CALLED "THE ACTION FOR PEACE AND INDEPENDENCE OF THE PEOPLES", A MOVEMENT WHICH IS REPORTED TO HAVE MANY PRO-COMMUNIST MEMBERS AMONG ITS RANKS. ONE OF THE LEADERS OF THE MOVEMENT, BARON ALLARD, RETURNED FROM A VISIT TO CHINA TO LEAD THE DEMONSTRATION AND TO ADDRESS THE CROWD.

THE NATO COUNCIL, TOP POLITICAL BODY OF THE 15 NATION PACT, MEETS IN BRUSSELS ON TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY TO DISCUSS THE FAR-REACHING MILITARY, POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC CONSEQUENCES OF FRANCE'S DECISION TO WITHDRAW FROM THE ORGANISATION.
