THE KING SIGNED THREE COPIES OF THE CONSTITUTION AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING IN BANGKOK.

    THE KING WAS WATCHED BY HIGH-RANKING OFFICIALS AND FOREIGN DIPLOMATS AS HE SIGNED THE NEW CONSTITUTION, WHICH HAD BEEN LABORIOUSLY INSCRIBED ON PALM LEAVES.

    ALTHOUGH ADMITTING THE CONSTITUTION, THE GOVERNMENT HAS MADE IT CLEAR THAT MEANWHILE THE 10-YEAR-OLD MARTIAL LAW REMAINS IN FORCE.

    THE KING WAS DRESSED IN FULL DRESS SUPREME COMMANDER'S UNIFORM OF WHITE TUNIC AND BLACK TROUSERS. HE APPEARED ON THE SPEAKER'S DAIS AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AT THE TIME CHOSEN AS AUSPICIOUS BY ROYAL ASTROLOGERS -- 10.29 A.M. LOCAL TIME.

    THE NEW CONSTITUTION, THAILAND'S EIGHTH SINCE 1932, CONTAINS 183 ARTICLES. ONE OF THEM CALLS FOR THE KING TO APPOINT 120 MEMBERS OF SENATE WITHIN 15 DAYS OF THE PROCLAMATION AND ANOTHER REQUIRES THE HOLDING OF GENERAL ELECTIONS FOR THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WITHIN EIGHT MONTHS.
