MORE THAN FIFTY-THOUSAND SOCCER FANS, INCLUDING CHIEF BURGOMASTER WILLI BRANDT, PACKED THE OLYMPIC STADIUM IN WEST BERLIN, GERMANY, NOV 12 TO WATCH SWITZERLAND PLAY SWEDEN IN A WORLD CUP ELIMINATING MATCH.

THE RESULT WAS A SHOCK WIN FOR SWITZERLAND BY TWO GOALS TO ONE, ALTHOUGH SWEDEN WERE LEADING ONE-NIL AT HALF TIME. SWEDEN, THIRD IN THE 1950 WORLD CUP TOURNAMENT AND FINALISTS AGAINST BRAZIL IN 1958, WERE CONSIDERED CERTAIN TO VANQUISH LITTLE FANCIED SWITZERLAND AND GO THROUGH TO JOIN THE LAST 16 TEAMS IN THE FINALS IN CHILE NEXT MAY. BOTH TEAMS HAD GAINED AN EQUAL NUMBER OF POINTS IN THEIR GROUP, AND WERE THEREFORE COMPELLED TO PLAY-OFF THE DECIDING MATCH IN WEST BERLIN.
