  • Description

The Shah of Iran left Egypt on Sunday (12 January) after a five-day visit described by Egyptian President Answer Sadat as a turning-point in relations between the two countries and in the entire Middle East.

President Sadat said, "We can say to the world at large that nobody will be able any longer to tamper with the map of our region or with our fate." Observers interpreted this as a reference to Egyptian efforts to mediate disputes between Iran and Iraq and to closer economic and military co-operation between Iran and Egypt.

The Shah, in an impromptu reply, predicted that the close ties established during his visit would "yield excellent results in the future". He praised President Sadat for what he called his "wise policy" and described him as "an able leader".

Speaking at a State Banquet on Saturday (11 January), President Sadat revealed for the first time that Iran had saved Egypt from an oil crisis last month. He said the Shah had sent 650,000 tons of oil in time to avert the crisis.

Later, in a joint communique, the two leaders asserted their rejection of attempts to blame increased oil prices for world inflation, and -- in an apparent reference to recent statements by U.S. Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger -- said no solution could be reached through threats of violence.

The two countries also called for a speedy resumption of the Geneva Peace Conference in order to restore a just and durable peace in the Middle East, which, they stressed, "requires the participation of the Palestine Liberation Organisation... representing the Palestine people".
