Background: INTRODUCTION: The Chief Executive of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) said on Tuesday (16 June) that bullets were needed to hasten the end of white rule in South Africa. Secretary-General Edem Kodjo was addressing the OAU Council of Ministers preparing for a conference of heads of state in Nairobi next week.

SYNOPSIS: The OAU supports two nationalist movements which are banned in South Africa; the Pan-African Congress (PAC) and the African National Congress (ANC). Both are waging guerrilla campaigns.

Dr. Kodjo said South Africa practised state terrorism with a white minority exercising absolute domination over a black majority. And he maintained bullets were needed to bring the dawn of a new day of freedom. The OAU also backs guerrillas fighting in Namibia (South West Africa) which is ruled by South Africa in defiance of world opinion. Dr. Kodjo criticised Western nations which vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for economic sanctions against South Africa to force Pretoria to negotiate a Namibian independence settlement. Dr. Kodjo said he wanted Namibia to gain independence this year, and he wanted to see Namibian delegates take their place among OAU members as soon as possible.
