    IN RECENT MONTHS THE AUTHORITIES SAY HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SLIPPING INTO THE TOWNS BRINGING WITH THEM LITTLE EXCEPT A CHANGE OF CLOTHES.

    THE GOVERNMENTS, OVER THE PAST FEW MONTHS, HAS ROUNDED UP NEARLY TWENTY-THOUSAND SUCH PEOPLE AND PUT THEM IN SPECIAL CAMPS. THEY ARE GIVEN FOOD AND MEDICAL TREATMENT AND ARE OFTEN VISITED BY THE LOCAL RED CROSS AUTHORITIES.

    IN THIS CAMP ALONE IN BEKASI -- ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF DJAKARTA -- SOME FIVE-HUNDRED ARE HOUSED.

    THE GOVERNMENT SUSPECTS THAT MANY OF THEM ARE MEMBERS OF THE BANNED COMMUNIST PARTY OF INDONESIA. THEY ARE INTERROGATED BY ARMY OFFICERS ABOUT THEIR ACTIVITY AND THEIR PLACES OF ORIGIN.

    SOME ARE TAKEN IN FOR FURTHER QUESTIONING AND OTHERS ARE ORDERED TO GO BACK TO THEIR PLACES OF ORIGIN -- IN MANY CASES EAST AND CENTRAL JAVA.
