  • Description

EAST GERMAN POLICE TODAY (SATURDAY) BUILT AN OBSTACLE "SNAKE" AT THE ACCESS ROUTE CONNECTING WEST BERLIN WITH THE AMERICAN SECTOR ENCLAVE OF STEINSTUECKEN, A TINY VILLAGE ABOUT ONE MILE FROM THE ACTUAL CITY, IN EAST GERMANY.

THE ENCLAVE, WHERE A NUMBER OF INCIDENTS HAVE TAKEN PLACE IN RECENT YEARS, IS CONNECTED WITH THE AMERICAN SECTOR BY A ROAD, CONTROLLED BY EAST GERMAN BORDER POLICE AND SURROUNDED BY TRIPLE BARBED WIRE FENCES.

STEINSTUECKEN HAS ABOUT 100 INHABITANTS, AND THESE ARE THE ONLY PEOPLE WITH ACCESS TO THE ENCLAVE, APART FROM ESSENTIAL SERVICES.

THE NEW IRON AND CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION FORCES MOTORISTS TO DRIVE SLOWLY THROUGH THE ZIG-ZAG BEFORE BEING ALLOWED TO ENTER WEST BERLIN. IT IS REPORTED THAT EAST GERMAN POLICE ARE STOPPING CARS IN THE SNAKE OBSTACLE AND CHECKING THEM FOR POSSIBLE REFUGEES.

WEST BERLIN CITY OFFICIALS SAID THAT CONSULTATIONS WITH AMERICAN AUTHORITIES WOULD BE HELD TOMORROW.
