  • Description

China's top sports official, Sung Chung, will present his country's case for admission to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Saturday (10 March). Sung Chung, the Secretary General of the All-China Sports Federation, has been invited to the IOC's Chateau de Vidy headquarters in Lausanne for a meeting with the nine-member IOC Executive board. The Executive is considering a detailed report by its three-man commission, headed by New Zealand broad-caster Lance Cross, which visited peking and Taiwan last year, to determine how the world's most populous nation could be brought back into the IOC.

SYNOPSIS: At its headquarters in Lausanne, the IOC seemed likely on Friday night (9 March) to face further delays in its decision whether to recognise China's bid for membership. The IOC Executive Board will devote all of Saturday (10 March) discussing the confidential report. Peking has requested to join the IOC -- provided Taiwan is expelled.

China's Communist Government has never sent athletes to any Olympic Games since it took power in 1949. It refuses to sit in the IOC -- and other international bodies -- while Taiwan remains a member. The IOC Executive may postpone a decision on the issue until the full IOC membership meets in Montevideo next month. IOC sources say that a decision then would be likely to favour Peking's admission, even if it means a controversial decision to expel the National Olympic Committee of Taiwan.
