  • Description

For folklore events in carnival setting, Binche puts on one of the world's most interesting processions.

Each year many thousands crowd the city for the carnival and to see the procession of the famous gilles de Binche, with their colourful dresses and high hats of ostrich feathers.

They also adorn themselves with coloured wooden shoes, and around their waists are bells which give out strange rhythms and tintinabullations as they dance along.

The procession usually sets out at 5 o'clock in the morning and ends in the afternoon with the great farandole in the Grand Place of Binche.

The widows of buildings along the processional way are protected with wire -- in their traditional manner the Gilles are in the habit of bombarding the spectators with oranges, some of which might miss their intended target and smash a window.

The Gilles never leave their home town. And they never participate in any carnival other than Binche's.
