  • Description

General of the Army Douglas MacArthur's illness has focused attention on the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, Virginia, which contains souvenirs of his long distinguished career.

The final resting place will be a crypt in the main rotunda; a crypt for his wife lies next to his. Nearby is a plaque listing the general's many achievements in both World Wars, in the Philippines and in Korea.

Glass fronted cabinets hold many mementos: MacArthur's famous corn cob pipe and his jaunty military cap. The General's career is traced in pictures that show him with athletic teams at West Point Military Academy, on the battlefields of World Wars I and II, signing the Japanese surrender document, on the Korean front and addressing Congress after his dismissal by former President Truman.
