  • Description

In his capacity as the new Chairman of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), President Idi Amin of Uganda, held an informal news conference in Kampala on Saturday (2 August). Dressed in a Charcoal grey suit, he deftly fielded a barrage of questions from journalists for more than an hour.

On the question of a proposed mediation commission to improve relations between Tanzania and Uganda, the President said that as far as Uganda was concerned, the Tanzanians were brothers and sisters. He made it clear that he was speaking on the issue as the Ugandan head of state, but assured his listeners that both as President of Uganda and Chairman of the OAU, he wanted peace and unity in Africa and in the world.

He was also asked about Africa's relations with Arab countries. President Amin replied that Arabs were "not well known" in Africa, but he would like to see them investing more of their money in African industry. If they did, the African countries -- who had plenty of raw materials -- would become as strong economically as other countries in the world.
