Background: Two false starts by Dutch competitor, Cockie Gastelaars, built up tremendous tension during the 110 yards international swimming championships at the North Sydney Olympic Pool on January 9.

And after the Dutch girl's two tumbles into the pool, the race got away with Lorraine Crapp of Australia, gaining sufficient speed to tough the turning board a split second before her chief rival.

Miss Crapp continued to hold the lead and at the finish was about 18 inches ahead to Miss Gastelaars, with Sandra Morgan (Australia), third. The winner's time was 1 minute 4 and 7/10 seconds. Miss Gastelaars clocked 1 minute 5 and one/tenth seconds.
