The pie-throwing incident was not the first sign of trouble around the Moynihan-for-Senator campaign. According to campaign manager, Sandy Frucher, there had been abusive telephone calls to headquarters. One call stated that a bomb was about to go off at headquarters but it turned out to be a hoax.

Background: Former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, had a cream pie slapped in his face in New York city on Sunday (5 September).

SYNOPSIS: The incident occurred as Mr. Moynihan was campaigning in a poor white section of the city for the democratic nomination to the Senate. A young man screaming "fascist pig" leapt out of the crowd, threw the pie and started running away. Eye-witnesses described the young man as a Yippy....a member of the Youth International Party, the political arm of the hippies. A number of people in the crowd offered their handkerchiefs to Mr. Moynihan who refused to press charges against his attacker.
