  • Description

Following heavy rainfalls in the French Department of Lot et Garonne, a landslip at Agen, Jan 12, destroyed three homes, threatened five others and necessitated the evacuation of 13 families.

Houses crumbled, walls split from top to bottom, and huge cracks appeared in roads and pavements, when a four-inch top layer of clay soil started sliding over a width of 150 yards down the side of a 230-foot hill, towards the banks of the Garonne.

Buildings on the side of the hill, known as D'Ermitage, are mostly detached private residences with terraced gardens. The landslip shifted foundations and disturbed the different soil levels so that rescuers had great difficulty in bringing vehicles up to the scene to salvage furniture and belongings.

About 50 people have left their homes in the surrounding area, and it is feared that more damage will be done as the mass of soil grinds down the hill at a slow but steady pace of one inch per hour.
