  • Description

Some 15,000 people, from 15 countries, including France, Switzerland and England, are taking part in a fourday "pleasure march" in central Holland, using the town of Nijmegen, famous during the closing stages of the world war, as their base. Some of the marchers are members of the armed forces of their countries -- both men and women: others are civilians.

Visnews cameras filmed the start of the march in the early hours of this morning, 21st July. They also filmed the preliminary parade of national and club flag and standard bearers in the Nijmegen stadium last evening, 20th July.

This is the 43rd annual Nijmegen pleasure march and each year sees and increased attendance from many countries. Those marchers who complete the full distances on each of the four days receive a medallion, which enable people from many nations to get to know something of each other under the most pleasant conditions.

Thousands of the marchers are given hospitality -- board and lodging -- by Dutch families in the Nijmegen and Arnhem areas.
