  • Description

The Ruling National Progressive Front coalition has accepted a new mandate from the people of Syria in the latest general elections.

SYNOPSIS: The people of Syria went to the polls for the second time since the President, Mr. Hafez Al-Assad, came to power in November 1970. The President heads a Socialist coalition... including the Communist Party. The ruling National Progressive Front coalition is expected to end up with a large majority of the 195 seats in the People's Assembly.

When President Hafez Al-Assad came to power, he introduced many measures which where to liberalise political life in Syria. One of the most important was the President's wish that all women in Syria have the right to vote.

Seventy per cent of the candidates in this latest election are members of the Arab Baath Socialist Party which not only controls the country but also the Communist, Socialist and Socialist Union parties which are all included in the Front coalition. The new Assembly will run for four years. All candidates in the election promised to continue the struggle to liberate Israeli-occupied Arab areas.
