Background: THE CONGO SITUATION: PRIME MINISTER TSHOMBE ARRIVED IN ADDIS ABABA TODAY (SATURDAY) FOR THE EXTRAORDINARY MEETING OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY TO DISCUSS THE STRIFE-TORN CONGO. BEFORE LEAVING LEOPOLDVILLE YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), M. TSHOMBE ANNOUNCED THAT THE SOUTH AFRICAN VOLUNTEERS FOR HIS ARMY WOULD BE SENT HOME.

ON WEDNESDAY, M TSHOMBE FLEW FROM LEOPOLDVILLE TO ALBERTVILLE, FOLLOWING THE RECAPTURE OF THE NORTH KATANGAN CAPITAL FROM THE REBEL FORCES LAST WEEKEND. IT HAD BEEN UNDER REBEL CONTROL FOR TWO MONTHS.

PRIME MINISTER TSHOMBE WAS GREETED ON ARRIVAL IN ALBERTVILLE, BY GENERAL BOBOZO, COMMANDER OF THE FOURTH ARMY GROUP. AFTER INSPECTING THE GUARD OF HONOUR, M. TSHOMBE WAS DRIVEN INTO THE CITY, ONLY PAUSING ON THE WAY TO LAY A WREATH ON THE GRAVE OF JASON SENDWE, THE PRESIDENT OF NORTH KATANGA, WHO WAS ASSASSINATED IN JUNE. IN THE CITY HE VISITED THE IMPROVISED HOSPITAL ESTABLISHED TO DEAL WITH THE CASUALTIES FROM THE FIGHTING.

REPORTS FROM ALBERTVILLE EARLIER THIS WEEK SPOKE OF STREETS STILL LITTERED WITH THE ROTTING BODIES OF REBELS KILLED. OTHERS HAD BEEN TIED TO TREES AND EXECUTED. THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION OFFICIAL IN CHARGE OF THE ALBERTVILLE HOSPITAL, ESTIMATED THAT 400 REBELS DIED IN THE BATTLE. THE CONGOLESE ARMY, WHICH TOOK NO PRISONERS, LOST 10 MEN DEAD AND SEVERAL OTHERS WOUNDED.
