Background: VISNEWS filmed Feb 9 the Queen Mother's visit to Masai tribesmen at Narok, Kenya.

The Queen Mother, on a three-week visit to Kenya and Uganda, brought good weather - rain whether - to their parched lands.

First the Queen Mother passed through crowds of camera-shy women as she arrived at a baraza (tribal gathering). Then after speeches from the tribal elders representing thousands of masai tribesmen, she said in the reply she hoped they would be blessed with rains.

Shortly after, there was a clap of thunder and the ditches and gullies became muddy torrents. Vehicles in the Royal party were bogged down and had to be pulled out.

Some of the tribesmen had travelled 150 miles for the baraza at narok, centre o f a vast reserve where the 120,000 remaining Masai tribesmen graze their herds. She was greeted by thousands of painted warriors waving shields, many wearing head-dresses from the manes of lions they had killed with spears. Masai women also danced and chanted.

Among the two hundred chiefs present was Chief Kortom, who pledge Masai were able in space. The Queen Mother told the chiefs and elders she had long known the fame of Masai and their reputation for loyalty courage.

After lunching with the District Commissioner, Mr. Christopher Denton, she flew to Mombasa, with her Masai gifts -- a girl's bead necklace and an elder's fly-whisk--and a silver flower bowl from the Asian community.
