  • Description

Bustling throngs of Christmas shoppers have been making their way through the streets of Rome in increasing numbers as the seasonal boom reaches its peak.

In spite of Italy's strong religious associations, to Italian children, as to children all over the world, Christmas is a time for receiving presents. And as everywhere, the toys being sold in Italy reflect the technical age we live in.

One popular line is a minirobot with a television screen built into its chest. A succession of colourful images pass across the screen, much to the fascination of the children in the fortunate position of having parents wealthy enough to purchase such a gift as a Christmas present.

But traditional Christmas scenes still dominate the pre-festival activities. Traders have been doing a roaring trade selling Christmas trees -- specially imported from colder climates -- and the streets have come alight as shopkeepers have transformed them into a neon-lit fairyland. Puppets and Father Christmas are still more attractive than robots, however versatile.
