  • Description

SYRIA'S BORDER WITH THE LEBANON WAS STILL CLOSED TO LEBANESE TRAFFIC YESTERDAY (FRIDAY), DESPITE THE AGREEMENT REACHED IN CAIRO LAST WEEKEND BETWEEN THE LEBANESE AUTHORITIES AND PALESTINIAN GUERILLAS, WHICH GREATLY RELIEVED TENSION IN THE LATEST MIDDLE EAST CRISIS AREA.

SYRIA ORIGINALLY SEALED THE FRONTIER THREE WEEKS AGO, FOLLOWING CLASHES BETWEEN LEBANESE SECURITY FORCES AND THE PALESTINIAN COMMANDOS.

SINCE THE CAIRO AGREEMENT, THE LEBANESE MINISTER OF ECONOMY, MR NASSIM MAJDALANI, HAS STATED THAT THE BORDER CLOSURE IS HARMFUL TO THE ENTIRE ARAB ECONOMY, AND HAS URGED SYRIA TO REOPEN ROUTES OF COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE CRISIS, TRANSIT FROM LEBANON ACROSS SYRIA TO JORDAN, SAUDI ARABIA AND IRAQ WAS STOPPED. THE SYRIANS ANNOUNCED THAT THEY HAD TAKEN MEASURES TO PREPARE THE PORT OF LATAKIA IN CENTRAL SYRIA FOR TRANSIT TRADE.

AT AL-MASNAA, THE LEBANESE BORDER POST WHICH EARLIER CAME UNDER COMMANDO ATTACK, A FEW PEDESTRIANS HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO CROSS INTO SYRIA -- BUT ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE THE CROSSING IN THEIR OWN TRANSPORT.
