  • Description

French fashion designers say that, this spring and summer, women will be wearing shorter skirts and wide-shouldered jackets. Paris couture showings this week indicate the key word for fashion in 1979 in 'elegance'.

SYNOPSIS: Yves St Laurent was the last of the major couturiers to show his styles. And, according to fashion experts, they'll be even more influential this year. The fashion writers praised his superbly-cut suits for day-wear, that were among the highlights of his enormous showing of one hundred and thirty models.

St Laurent had spread black right through the collection, presenting a number of black and white combinations relieved by splashes of colour in the accessories. His profusion of jackets ran from simple spencers and boleros to tailored blazers softened with satin or silk crepe blouses and neck-bows. Skirts are slim and end just below the knee.

Fashion writers say the new designs reflect fashions from the late nineteen-thirties to the fifties. St Laurent, they say, has shied away from constraining styles. Instead, he offers comfort, suppleness, practical lines, understated chic and the classical look. His dresses hug the figure, and almost none features a belt.

Evening wear made up two thirds of St laurent's showing. Many had a saucy lingerie look...Sheer and lacy. One fashion expert described the overall look for seventy-nine as that of a definite lady...sexy but always refined.
