The ceremony the climax of the new King's coronation took place behind the doors of the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti capital of Jumasi in central Ghana.
The new King or Asantehene is a 50-year-old former barrister. He succeeds his uncle King Sir Osea Agyeman Prempeh II who died in May after a 35-year reign.
Following strict custom the enstoolment began at midnight when the golden stool which has rarely been shown in public was placed on an elephant skin. The Asantehene then took his place on the stool and completed the traditional rites.
He later walked out into the palace grounds to the defending sound of drums and more than 10-thousand people surged round as the 16 paramount chiefs of Ashanti stepped forward to swear their oaths of allegiance.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Busia, the Chairman of the Presidentail Commission Brigadier ??? ministers diplomats and M.P.s.
