  • Description

Thousands of demonstrators converged on the United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday. They had come to add their voices to the lobby for and against the admission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations. Inside the building, the General Assembly was opening the session during which the whole Chinese question is likely to be decided.

Several hundred of New York's Chinese community, backed by labour unions, planned a march in favour of Chinese admission. At the same time, about 5,00 supporters of Taiwan paraded and chanted slogans against Chinese admission. Police lines kept the two sides apart.

SYNOPSIS: Outside the United Nations in New York, feelings ran high for and against the admission of the Chinese People's Republic to the U.N. on Tuesday. New York's Chinese community, backed by labour unions, staged a march in favour of Chinese admission. At the same time, inside the headquarters the General Assembly was starting its new three-month session. During it, the United States will introduce resolutions calling for Chinese representation and Security council membership. But a second resolution calls for a two-thirds majority before Taiwan can be expelled from the U.N.

Supporters of Taiwan were also out in force on Tuesday. About five-thousand of them converged on the U.N. building shouting anti-Chinese slogans. And police lines had their work cut out keeping the two sides apart. In the meantime, and anonymous telephone call sent police rushing into the building on what turned out to be a bomb hoax. The caller said he had planted sticks of dynamite timed to explode within hours of the General Assembly session opening. Police found nothing. And apart from a few arrests, the demonstrations passed of without serious incident.
