  • Description

One hundred and fifty-three more wounded and sick Greek and Turkish Cypriot prisoners were exchanged in Nicosia on Saturday (21 September). The group included 42 Greek and 111 Turkish Cypriots, captured since the Turkish invasion of the island on 20 July.

the Red Cross and United Nations supervised the transfer, which completed the exchange of sick and wounded agreed to by the leaders of the two Cypriot communities last week. Under a new agreement the remaining prisoners of war - estimated at more than 4000 - will be exchanged from Monday (23 September). The operation is expected to take 10 days.

A Red Cross official said several of the Greek-Cypriot prisoners exchanged on Saturday had come from prison camps in Turkey. Most of the Turks freed were held in the town of Lanarca, on the south-east coast of the island.

With the prisoners question agreed to, the next problem facing Cypriot authorities is the 226,000 refugees. It is expected to be tackled at the weekly meeting of President Glafkos Clerides and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash on Friday (27 September).
