AS THE PLANE TOUCHED DOWN ONE OF THE WINGS BURST INTO FLAMES AND THE PILOT LOST CONTROL. THE REMAINING FOUR PASSENGERS WERE HURT - BUT SERGEANT ANDRE DELQUE WAS WELL ENOUGH TO SPEAK TO EXPERTS OF THE GREEK NATIONAL DEFENCE MINISTRY WHO INSPECTED THE WRECKAGE.

    THE MEN - ALL OFFICERS AND NCO'S WERE FLYING TO HERAKLION TO ATTEND CELEBRATIONS MAKING THE 22ND ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF A FRENCH HERO - SERGEANT LIOSEC - WHO BLEW UP NAZI DEPOTS NEAR THE AIRPORT DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. HE WAS KILLED SOON AFTER THE OPERATION.

    THE MEN WERE TO HAVE RETURNED TO FRANCE ON NOVEMBER 16.
