  • Description

The worst crisis in the history of Nairobi, in respect of the water supply is now worsening. With the present supply of water down to less than six hours of the normal needs the City Council have had to take drastic measures to combat this and only one hour of normal water supply has been allowed today, the rest of the time the mains have been switched off except for one point in the town where Army lorries pull water bowsers have been filling up to take the necessary water to the various housing estates. In the African estates which have been worst hit the African residents are almost fighting for water now.The cause of this grave emergency is strangely enough - water. With the heavy rains causing landslides, one such slide crashed into the main 24 inch supply line from the Sasmua Dam, some fifty miles from Narobi, and fractured the line, carrying away large sections of it.The army was asked to help and the Royal Engineers were soon on the job, and all last night they were driving a way through the thick bamboo forest to get to the broken line.Meanwhile the Gordon Highlanders and the Staffordshires have been working round the clock to supply the inhabitants of the city with water. The medical officer of health has issued warnings that all water used for drinking has to be boiled, as well as all milk, to try and beat the epidemics which could break out in hours. The supply is not expected to be eased for at least three days even if things go according to plan, and the rain does not wash away the work that already has been done, high in the mountains by the - BRITISH ARMY.
