Background: Hard on the heels of israeli government warnings tat a new Middle East war may be imminent, forces of the Israeli army, navy and air force have been involved in large-scale manoeuvres during recent days.
The war games have been described by the Army as among the most important since the October War of last year. And since there's been no attempt at secrecy this time, the manoeuvres have been interpreted as a warning to Arab neighbours that Israel is in a state of full military preparedness.
Recently, Israeli Premier Yitzhak Rabin, Defence Minister Shimon Peres and Chief of Staff Lt. General Mordechai Gur have warned that the Arabs might renew hostilities in the Middle East by the end of the year.
While this week's monoeuvres were underway, Mr. Peres accused the Soviet Union of making arms deliveries to Syria and Iraq, and he accused the Syrians and other Arab peoples of threatening war.
