  • Description

A NEW OIL RIG FOR NORTH SEA DRILLING IS BEING BUILT IN BELFAST. THE GBP3.5 MILLION (STERLING) SEA QUEST WILL REPLACE SEA GEM WHICH COLLAPSED AND SANK INTO THE NORTH SEA 40 MILES (64 KMS) OFF THE ENGLISH COAST ON DECEMBER 27. SEA QUEST IS EXPECTED TO BE READY FOR DRILLING LATE APRIL ON EARLY MAY NEXT YEAR.

SEA QUEST WILL WEIGH 15,000 TONS AND BE MORE THAN 107 YARDS (100 METRES) HIGH. EACH SIDE OF ITS TRIANGULAR DECK WILL BE ALMOST 100 YARDS LONG. ITS THREE SUPPORTING LEGS -- 11 YARDS IN DIAMETER -- WILL STAND ON SUBMERSIBLE PONTOONS.

UNLIKE SEA GEM, IT WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE EITHER WHILE RESTING ON THE SEABED IF THE WATER IS LESS THAN 135 FEET (135 METRES) DEEP OR AS A FLOATING RIG IN DEEPER WATER.

SEA QUEST WILL BE LAUNCHED ON JANUARY 7 AND SHOULD BE READY TO BE TOWED TO THE NORTH SEA BY THE END OF MARCH.
