  • Description

THE THREE AMERICAN PILOTS RELEASED BY NORTH VIETNAM ON FRIDAY FLEW INTO THE ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, OUTSIDE WASHINGTON, TODAY (SUNDAY). THEY SAID THEY WERE HAPPY TO BE HOME BUT DECLINED TO DISCUSS DETAILS OF THEIR CAPTIVITY AFTER THEIR PLANES WERE SHOT DOWN OVER NORTH VIETNAM ABOUT SIX MONTHS AGO.

THE PILOTS ARE LIEUTENANT-COLONEL MORRIS M. OVERLY, AGE 39; CAPTAIN JOHN DAVID BLACK, AGED 30; AND LIEUTENANT DAVID PAUL MATHENY, AGED 23. THEY FLEW INTO VIENTIANE, THE CAPITAL OF LAOS, ON FRIDAY NIGHT ON AN INTERNATIONAL CONTROL COMMISSION FLIGHT FROM HANOI. ACCOMPANYING THEM WERE OFFICIALS OF THE AMERICAN COMMITTEE AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR, TO WHOM THEY WERE HANDED OVER IN HANOI.

THE OFFICIALS HAD A BITTER ARGUMENT WITH THE U.S. AMBASSADOR IN LAOS, MR. WILLIAM SULLIVAN, OVER U.S. AIR FORCE PLANS TO FLY THE THREE MEN HOME IN A MILITARY AIRCRAFT. THE COMMITTEE OFFICIALS ARGUED THAT THIS WAS "OFFENSIVE TO THE SPIRIT OF THE RELEASE" AND SAID THE MEN SHOULD RETURN ON A COMMERCIAL FLIGHT. THE THREE PILOTS TOLD NEWSMEN THEY HAD BEEN WELL TREATED IN THE HANOI PRISON CAMP.
