  • Description

Thousands of Greek Cypriot schoolchildren stopped traffic in the centre of Nicosia on Saturday (15 January), with demonstrations for Enosis (Union with Greece). They were commemorating the anniversary of the 1950 plebiscite, organised by the Cyprus orthodox Church, in which Greek Cypriots voted overwhelmingly for Enosis.

The plebescite sparked the nationalist campaign, which culminated in the Eoka uprising against gritish rule five years later. Cyprus became independent in 1960, but the Enosis campaigners have kept up their political efforts.

Saturday's demonstrations included speeches at the Greek Embassy and the Presidential Palace in favour of Enosis. On Sunday, Enosis supporters from all over the country are expected to attend a mass rally in Nicosia. The supporters form the official opposition to Archbishop Makarios' administration, which is pledged to maintain the island's independence and seek reconciliation with the Turkish Cypriot community.
