  • Description

President Samora Machel of newly-independent Mozambique received an emotional welcome when he arrived in the Tanzanian capital, Dar Es Salaam, on Saturday (5 July) for a weekend summit conference with African nationalist leaders from Rhodesia.

President Machel was greeted at the airport by his host and long time ally, President Julius Nyerere, and by members of the Tanzanian Government and the country's ruling party, Tanu.

The Mozambique leader left Dar Es Salaam just over six weeks ago as a guerrilla leader and President-designate of Mozambique. His return to Tanzania was his first overseas visit since being sworn to office as Mozambique's President less than two weeks ago.

President Machel and President Nyerere joined President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, and African National Council leaders, Bishop Abel Muzorewa, Joshua Nkomo, Ndabaningi Sithole and James Chikerema for talks in a secluded hotel in Dar Es Sallam for the weekend. The aim of the meeting was described as producing a new strategy for negotiating a peaceful end to white minority rule in Rhodesia.

The meeting was the second since the Lusaka talks breakthrough last December which led to talks between African National Council (A.N.C.) leaders and Rhodesian Prime Minister, Ian Smith. But in the past eight months, splits have appeared in the uncertain unity of A.N.C. ranks.

The only official details to emerges from Saturday's first summit session was that talks began at eight in the evening and continued past midnight. Observers believe that one of the major problems facing Presidents Nyerere, Kaunda and Machel is that of maintaining unity of aim and action among the A.N.C. leaders.
