Background: In Sydney today a tram got out of control on a steep hill near the Taronga Park Zoo, careered for half a mile down a steep grade, crashed into a car, injuring two people seriously, ploughed into a heap of ballast, at the water front and ended up like this.

The tram came down this hill, and sent the car smashing into another tram. Two people in the car, Mr. R. Sharpe, of Mosman and his four year old son, Murray, were admitted to the Mater Hospital with head injuries. Their condition tonight was given as serious. There were no passengers in the tram at the time of the accident and the driver, seen here, and the conductor, escaped unhurt. A safety fence and the pile of ballast offered little resistance to the tram as it ran off the end of the lines. A spokesman for the Government Transport Department said tonight that a floating crane would have to be used to remove the tram. It would probably have to stay just like that for a few days until arrangements could be made to move it. Although the tram seemed to be comparatively unharmed by its crash on to the rocks, a closer examination showed that the under carriage had been badly damaged. It ended up with the driver's cabin partly in the water.

This was at low tide and it's expected that when the tide is full most of the front of the tram will be covered by water, which will add considerably to the damage.
