  • Description

THE ITALIAN SKIER FRANCO NONES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) PRODUCED THE BIGGEST SHOCK OPENING TO THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN FRANCE BY DEFEATING THE NORWEGIAN SKIERS AT THEIR OWN SPECIALITY.

NONES, AGED 27, WON THE FIRST GOLD MEDAL OF THE GAMES BY WINNING THE GRUELLING 30 KILOMETRE CROSS COUNTRY, CLOCKING ONE HOUR 39.2 SECONDS. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME ANY MEDAL FOR A NORDIC SKIING EVENT IN THE WINTER OLYMPICS HAS BEEN WON FROM A SKIER FROM OUTSIDE NORDIC COUNTRIES OR THE SOVIET UNION.

NONES STARTED THE EVENT AT A FAST PACE. THE EVENT IS PARTICULARLY EXHAUSTING BECAUSE MUCH OF THE GOING IS FLAT OR UPHILL.

THE CROSS IS A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK, AND COMPETITORS STARTED AT THIRTY SECOND INTERVALS. NONES HAD THE FASTEST TIME AT THE ONE THIRD AND TWO THIRDS STAGES, AND HE MAINTAINED HIS FAST PACE FOR THE REMAINING TEN KILOMETRES, FINISHING 50 SECONDS AHEAD OF ODD MARTINSEN, OR NORWAY, WHO WAS SECOND. THE DEFENDING CHAMPION, EERO MAENTYRANTA, OF FINLAND, PRE-RACE FAVOURITE WAS THIRD.

SIXTY SIX SKIERS PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT. DURING THE RACE NONES OVERTOOK GUNNAR LARSSON, OR SWEDEN, AND GJERMUND EGGEN, OR NORWAY. LARSSON STARTED THIRTY SECONDS AHEAD OF NONES, AND EGGEN ONE MINUTE AHEAD.
