  • Description

Freight train derailed by a dynamite blast near St. Augustine, Florida.

Five diesel locomotive and 27 cars of the Florida East Coast Railway train were blown off the tracks, but there were no serious injuries. One locomotive engineer suffered minor injuries from lying glass.

Thirteen hundred members of 11 non-operating unions went on strike against the railroad 23 January 1968 in a wage dispute. Since that time there have been dozens of violence along the Jacksonville-to Miami railroad. The FEC blames saboteurs; union officials have denied consistently that their members are involved.

The blast Thursday (27 February) occurred while President Johnson was in Florida for a one-day visit. The President ordered the Federal Bureau of Investigation to send its best investigators to Florida to bring the dynamiters to account.
