    The Second World Badminton Invitation tournament opened in Jakarta on Wednesday (October 9) with players from nine countries contesting for the world titles. Two European players quickly showed their form in the single competition.

    In the absence of world men's singles champion Rudi Hartono of Indonesia, Svend Pri of Denmark quickly made an impact. A first-day crowd of 10,000 watched him win a hard-fought match over Indonesian Christian Hadinata.

    Pri lost the first set 11-15, but he rallied to take the last two sets 15-14, 15-12. Pri later went on to win the final against another Indonesian, Tjun Tjun.

    In the women's singles. Britain's Margaret Beck scored a resounding first-round win over Japan's Mika Ikeda, storming through 12-10, 11-1. Miss. Beck also battled through to the final, which she won in straight sets against Indonesia's Tati Sumirah.
